Walk-in care for international students
Town Care Clinic provides in-person assessment for many stable, non-life-threatening health concerns. International students, exchange students, newcomers and visiting family members can request care even when they do not have OHIP.
The medical assessment is based on the health concern, not the type of insurance. Billing is handled separately through verified coverage or private payment. Call (416) 792-2654 before travelling so reception can explain the current process without promising how an insurer will decide a claim.
Choose the correct insurance path
If your coverage card says UHIP, review the UHIP walk-in clinic guide. It explains what to bring, Cowan claim considerations and why direct billing should be confirmed before every visit.
If your card says Guard.me, review the Guard.me walk-in clinic guide. It explains eligible direct billing, policy verification and documents that may be needed for reimbursement.
Students with another private plan should call reception with the insurer’s name and policy information. A private-pay visit may be available when direct billing cannot be arranged.
Direct billing and private payment
Direct billing means the clinic submits an eligible charge to the insurer. It does not guarantee approval. Coverage must be active, the service must be included and the patient’s identifying information must match the policy.
If verification is unavailable or a claim is declined, payment may be required. Keep itemized receipts and the clinical documents provided to you. External laboratory, imaging, ambulance, specialist and hospital charges are separate from clinic fees.

Town Care Clinic is located at Unit 109A – 55 Town Centre Court, Scarborough, near Scarborough Town Centre. The location is accessible to students attending the University of Toronto Scarborough, Centennial College Progress Campus and other schools in east Toronto.
Town Care Clinic is not affiliated with UHIP, Cowan, Manulife, Guard.me, the University of Toronto or Centennial College. Insurance information is general, coverage is determined by the insurer, and patients remain responsible for charges the insurer does not pay.

Can an international student see a clinician without OHIP?
Yes. Many clinic services are available through private payment or eligible private insurance. Call before visiting to confirm the current process, service availability and documents required.
Which insurance guide should I use?
University students covered through UHIP should use the UHIP guide. Students whose Healthcare Access Card says Guard.me should use the Guard.me guide. If you have another plan, call reception before visiting.
Does Town Care Clinic directly bill every student insurance plan?
No. Direct billing depends on the insurer, the clinic's current arrangement, successful eligibility verification and whether the service is covered. Guard.me and UHIP patients should review their dedicated guide and call ahead.
Does direct billing guarantee that I will pay nothing?
No. Deductibles, exclusions, inactive coverage, benefit limits or an insurer's decision can leave a patient balance. Patients are responsible for charges the insurer does not pay.
What happens if I need tests or specialist care?
Laboratory, imaging, specialist, ambulance and hospital providers bill separately and may have different insurance arrangements. Contact the insurer when coverage or authorization is unclear.
