UHIP walk-in care in Scarborough
Town Care Clinic welcomes international students who need assessment for stable, non-life-threatening health concerns. You do not need an Ontario health card to request care. Billing may be handled through verified insurance or private payment, depending on the service and the clinic’s current arrangement with UHIP.
Call (416) 792-2654 before travelling. Reception can confirm current hours, whether the requested service is available and what billing documents to bring. Insurance approval cannot be guaranteed before the insurer processes the claim.
How UHIP billing works
UHIP is administered by Cowan Insurance Group, with coverage provided by Manulife. Preferred Provider Network clinics bill Cowan directly at UHIP rates. Patients who visit outside that network may need to pay and submit a claim, and charges above UHIP reimbursement can remain the patient’s responsibility.
Town Care Clinic’s direct-billing status may change, so confirm it with reception before each visit. If you pay, ask for an itemized receipt containing the information Cowan requires and keep copies of all documents.
Use UHIP’s official clinic and provider finder to review current Preferred Provider Network information. UHIP also publishes claim submission instructions for members who receive an invoice or pay for care.
What your visit may include
The clinician will review your symptoms, medical history, allergies and current medications before recommending care. Depending on the concern, the plan may include home-care advice, a prescription, testing, follow-up or referral.
Laboratory, imaging, specialist, ambulance and hospital services may be billed separately. Confirm coverage directly with UHIP when a service is costly, scheduled in advance or requires authorization.

Does Town Care Clinic directly bill UHIP?
Call before visiting to confirm the clinic's current UHIP billing arrangement. If direct billing cannot be arranged, payment may be required at the visit and you may need to submit an itemized claim to Cowan.
What should I bring to a UHIP walk-in visit?
Bring a paper copy of your active UHIP coverage card, photo identification, university or member information, a medication list and a payment method for charges that cannot be billed or are not covered.
Does UHIP guarantee that I will pay nothing?
No. Coverage depends on the service, active eligibility, plan limits and the insurer's decision. Services outside UHIP benefits or amounts above reimbursement limits may remain your responsibility.
Can I visit if I do not have my UHIP card?
You can still ask about a private-pay visit, but direct billing or coverage verification may not be possible without your card and member information. Contact your university's UHIP office if you cannot access your card.
What if I need laboratory, imaging or specialist care?
Those providers bill separately and may have different UHIP arrangements. Ask whether the recommended provider accepts UHIP and contact Cowan when coverage or authorization is unclear.
